Believe it or not, the latest fad in androgyny is for men to wear stiletto heels.
It is really not so surprising when one considers that women’s wear has been borrowing heavily from the wardrobes of men for some time.
The cinema has glorified high-heeled shoes for men in such films as Saturday Night Fever and Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. But the real question is, Has art imitated life, or is it the other way around?
These elite high heels range from $500.00 to $5,000.00 a pair, which makes them out of range for all but a few admirers.
This killer shoe, which represents the epitome of the high heel, actually dates back to the 16th century, when aristocrats believed that the higher that the heel the greater the social status. During the Renaissance era, the Venetians were known to have their marriages annulled when they discovered their brides weren’t as tall as originally perceived. Often, women needed aides to help them balance themselves due to the excessive height of their footwear.
In India, particularly, the stiletto presents the possibility of an enduring power trip, or as most people seem to feel, a passing fad.
“The usage of men’s heels as such will be marginal. I think, technically, men will find it tougher to balance themselves on the stiletto as opposed to women, who are used to it,” says Manish Malhotra.
It does seem that somewhere along the trendy path of fashion, the point of a beautiful show has been missed.
The power of the stiletto heel does not lie in its ability to affect others, but rather in its capability to help the woman who wears it communicate a message of elegance and personal grace.
There will always be an aura of mystery surrounding stiletto heels because each person who wears them is different, proclaiming his or her own particular style and message.
