China CNR Corp. Ltd. is the nation’s second-largest train maker, and its pool of engineers have now developed a prototype of a high-speed train that can withstand temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius.
The China Academy of Railway Sciences (CARS) is currently evaluating the safety issues surrounding this high-speed train.
“We demand bullet trains running in severe cold areas withstand the test of temperature as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius, and such requirements are very stringent,” said Heping Li, a researcher with CARS.
Some of the tests the high speed train must undergo concern its components and control system as it operates under an ultra-low temperature environment.
The train will make its debut by the end of this year if it passes the tests, and is slated specifically for use on the Harbin-Dalian route in northeast China.
